There are various reasons why commercial pet foods aren‘t a good choice for your pets, some of them being modern farming practices, genetically modified foods, food processing etc. They vary hugely in quality and nutritional value. The nutrition al values of the ingredients is useless as they are cooked and processed making them Deficient of nutrition. While some are made if good ingredients, most contain in them such low quality ingredients, harmful additives and preservatives that you would be left horrified.
If you wouldn’t eat dog or cat food, ask yourself you are happy to feed it to your pet.
1. whats inside
You don‘t know what’s going inside that commercial food, fairly large number of times animals that are dead, sick, unfit for human consumption end up boing processed for commercial pet food.
2. The Bad Grains
Corn, Wheat, and Soy are popular ingredients in common brand pet foods. These grains can be a major cause of allergy symptoms including paw chewing, red or irritated ears, hot spots, and excessive scratching. Both dogs and cats do not possess the enzymes in their digestive systems to breakdown these grains rendering them almost useless as a nutritional source.
3. Chemical Preservatives.
These are very common in popular dog and cat food. Chemicals such as BHA/BHT (Butylated hydroxyanisole / butylated hydroxytoluene), ethoxyquin and Propolene Glycol, which we admit are very difficult to pronounce and are probably just as dangerous to your pet as they sound. These are chemical preservatives that allow commercial pet food to stay on store shelves or in wear-houses for many years. Most have been banned for human consumption in just about every country in the world due to their links with cancer, but are still allowed to be in pet food.
4. Sourcing and Recalls
In 2007 there was a world wide pet food recall due to high levels of melamine in wheat gluten from China. The recall affected over 5300 pet food products and resulted in over 3000 dog and cat deaths (some estimates double that number). The Melamine was traced to Menu Foods in Streetsville, Ontario which supplied wheat gluten to Purina products by Nestle, Hills Science Diet, and Royal Canin by Mars Corporation, Natural Balance, Blue Buffalo, Costo’s Kirkland, and Diamond Pet Foods. The problem with this type of ingredient distribution is that if one main ingredient becomes contaminated, it can affect hundreds if not thousands of products and tens of thousands of pets.
5. Who owns the pet food industry
The pet food industry is owned by a hand full of large publicly traded billion dollar corporations including Nestle (Purina), Mars (Royal Canin), Proctor and Gamble (Iams & Eukunuba), Colgate Palmolive Co. (Hills Science Diet), Many of these pet foods at one time or another were very good foods, until they were bought by the major corporations. Many of these larger companies have reduced the quality of ingredients and began to source from Asia (China) in an effort to reduce cost.
6. Freshness Lasts Three Weeks
Most quality pet food company’s vacuum seal food bags. This gives them a shelve life for about a 9 months. However once you open that bag, you have about 3 weeks before the benefits of that food start to decay. Once you pass the 5 week mark you could start to develop low level mold and other issues that could harm your pet.
Apart from a few exclusion, most tinned or canned pet food contain meat which may be labbled as ‘meat derivatives’ or ‘meat by-products’ . This is uaually low quality and includes ears, horns, hooves, hides, beaks, feathers, entrail, high amount of saturated fats and diseased and cancerous meat that has been deem unfit for human consumption. In some countries even dead pets a d roadkills find their way into pet food. Canned food vegetable protein derived from cereal, texturised vegetable protein and soya, much of which are waste by-products of human food industry . Poor quality food offers substandard nutrition and also taxes the liver, kidneys and digestive system as a whole. Lead and other toxic metals contaminate pet foods as a result of processing and canning . They adversely effect the immune system and let your pets vulnerable to diseases.
When it comes to feeding our pets, dried dog food or kibble is the most popular choice, because they are much more convenient than homemade dog food, though the same can not be said about the nutritional value. No variety, no fresh meat, no fresh vegetables and often inadequate nutrition.
Dried dog food, must always be soaked at least for half an hour before you give it to your pet, because other wise they might absorb too much fluid from your pets digestive tract. Most manufacturers recommend to ensure that plenty of water is available, but you can not make sure that your pet will drink the amount of water required, so soaking the food ensures that your pet gets enough fluids. If your pet isn't getting enough water to flush out metabolic wastes then kidney problems may surface.
Dried foods are also thought to contribute to kidney problems and cystitis due to the poor quality of protein content which upsets body's acid/alkaline balance.
Most dog foods contain "permitted antioxidants" used as preservatives, which may result in a number if health issues, namely liver cancer, skin allergies, autoimmune diseases and reproductive problems.
I would conclude by saying that though packaged dry food is a convenient option, fresh food is always better. If giving dry dog food, you must research the ingredients present in the food, make sure it doesn't contain anything your pet is allergic to and try to get the best possible option available in the market.
It’s is always better to know what is going inside that bowl.
A naturally balanced and well-varied, homemade pet food can be exceptionally beneficial for many reasons.
Health issues like kidney, liver and heart disease can all be managed through veterinary care and a properly selected homemade pet food diet. Some advantages of feeding homemade pet food include:
Commercial pet foods bulk up their products with cheap filler ingredients that lack nutritional value. This allows for the creation of large amounts of food for a reduced cost.
Ingredients that are not nutritionally valuable, however, tend to pass through your pet’s system and create more waste.
It is also worth noting that filler ingredients in pet foods are often allergy-causing ingredients. Homemade pet food allow you to optimize the nutritional value of the food you're feeding and eliminate unnecessary fillers and potential allergens.
Feeding a commercial pet food diet often results in feeding the same variety of pet food. This lack of variation is boring for your pet, but it is also limiting in terms of nutritional value.
Homemade pet food recipes allow you to regularly vary the ingredients of your pet‘s meals to offer a wider range of nutrients. Just like us, the more varied the nutrients your pet receives from their diet, the healthier they will be.

Where even the best quality commercial dog foods incorporate artificial preservatives and added salts to keep them fresh, homemade dog food does not.
These preservatives can exacerbate existing health conditions, like heart disease, as well as contribute to general poor health.
Just as it is better for humans to eat fewer preservatives and more fresh food, it is healthier for dogs as well..
When our pets have allergies, it is not always enough to simply choose a Commercial food without that allergen in it. It is possible that a dog food can be exposed to that allergen during manufacturing or contain another variant of that allergen, such as chicken fat versus chicken.
When making home made pet food, you can control exactly what ingredients go into your pet's food and eliminate any trace of allergens.
You can work with your veterinarian or a canine nutritionist to eliminate the allergens in homemade dog food and substitute healthy alternatives.

Cats are obligate (strict or true) carnivores, meaning they require certain nutrients that they cannot synthesize which are only found in meat. The very name carnivore means devourer of flesh. Cats large and small, wild and domestic need to eat meat as their main source of nutrients. A cat is solely designed to hunt, kill, eat, and process meat.
